Waterboys

by The Chris Long Foundation

“I started Waterboys because I realized I needed to take advantage of the platform that I have as an NFL player to affect change. Around the same time, I went to Tanzania to climb Mount Kilimanjaro. For me, that experience — seeing the poverty, the deficit in quality of life — gave me clarity about how I wanted to make a difference.” — Chris Long

The Waterboys Initiative calls on the support of stars from around the NFL to manifest its mission by recruiting players from each of the 32 NFL teams to represent their franchise as the official “Waterboy.” As Waterboys, players put aside allegiance and team up with fans in support of a single shared cause: providing clean, accessible drinking water to rural communities in East Africa.

WATER

The consequences of water scarcity go far beyond inadequate access to drinking water. Water scarcity limits educational, economic and agricultural opportunities and shortens life expectancies for the most vulnerable.

HOW WE DIG DEEP

Waterboys provides affected communities with clean, safe and sustainable water access by hiring local crews to drill deep borehole wells serving up to 7,500 people.

Our innovative approach to fundraising encourages players and fans to mobilize their social networks, raising awareness and encouraging donations from corporate sponsors and everyday fans. Each donation may seem like a drop in the bucket, but the ripple effect results in immeasurable benefits for the communities we serve.

Our goal is to install 32 wells representing each of the 32 NFL teams. At a cost of $45,000 per well, we can’t do it without your help.

For an issue with impact this broad, every contribution counts: every dollar, every drop.

  • $6 provides water access to one person
  • $30 provides water access to one household
  • $100 saves 35,000 hours spent on retrieval
  • $300 prevents a 181,440 mile jerrycan carry
